Stop Throwing Away Your Money on Paper and Ink

March 26th, 2013 Posted in Business, Internet, Technology

You may already know how expensive it can be to do printing jobs, especially if you need to print documents regularly for your growing business or for your kids’ school projects and assignments. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to keep yourself from spending more money on your printer’s ink cartridges and papers. Besides allowing you to save on printing costs, the tips enumerated below also help reduce paper usage and minimize waste, allowing you to create an eco-friendly home and work environment. Here are some tips on how you can save on your printing costs:

Get your printer’s ink cartridges refilled

Once your printer runs out of ink, consider getting your printer’s old ink cartridge refilled instead of buying a new one. Cartridges in good condition can be refilled up to six times and will only cost you a fraction of what you would spend on a new ink cartridge. You can bring your cartridge to retailers like Cartridge World, Walgreens and Costco. Alternatively, you can refill your printer’s ink cartridges yourself by buying an ink refill kit. Refilling ink cartridges has its own disadvantages though. Ink streaks, leaks and clogged printer heads may happen if refilling is done incorrectly and this can cause irreparable damage to your printer.

Use compatible ink cartridges

If you don’t want to take chances with refilling your cartridge’s ink, you can buy a new ink cartridge for your printer instead. Branded ink cartridges such as those that are sold under the manufacturer’s name can be very expensive so a better option is to use a compatible ink cartridge or those generic printer cartridges that are made by third party vendors. These cartridges are often sold at a significantly lesser price than those cartridges sold by your printer’s manufacturer. You can find a cartridge that is designed for your printer in retailers such as Staples and Office Max. You can also order from online retailers that sell low cost ink cartridges that are compatible to your printer. Online retailers also sell remanufactured printer ink cartridges. These are printer cartridges that have been recycled, refilled and resold. Their cost can be up to 60 percent cheaper than name brand ink cartridges.

Print in grayscale and draft setting

Do you really need to print perfectly clear copies of news articles or amusing anecdotes that you only intend to read once?  Using the high quality setting of your printer requires more ink so the ink runs out faster when you always print in high quality. Unless you’re printing important documents such as web receipts of your small business phone service and letters for your prospective clients, you might as well use the draft setting of your printer, which requires less ink. Color ink cartridges are also often more expensive than the black and white so try to print only colored texts and images only when necessary. Instead of printing colored photos using your home printer, have your photos printed by a photo printing service provider. You can even order prints online and have the photos mailed to you. It’s cheaper, especially if you print dozens of photos and the printouts are likely better than when you print using your personal printer.

Reduce your paper usage

You can save paper and reduce costs if you skip printing documents and opt for e-documents. Using programs such as CutePDF, you can convert your documents to PDF files and store them on your PC. You can also send a copy to your email or cloud storage account for access later on should you need to produce hard copies of these documents.
