Considering an MCSE? Then it’s likely that you’ll fall into one of two camps: You’re currently an IT professional and you need to formalise your skill set with a qualification such as MCSE. Or this could be your first step into the IT environment, and you’ve discovered that there are many opportunities for men and women who are commercially qualified.
When looking into , ensure that you steer clear of those who cut costs by failing to provide the latest level of Microsoft development. Such institutions will hold back the student due to the fact that they’ll have learned an old version of MCSE which doesn’t correspond to the current exam syllabus, so it’s going to be hugely difficult for them to get qualified. Be aware of training companies who’re only trying to make a sale. You should know that purchasing a course to qualify for an MCSE is like buying a car. They vary hugely; some are reliable and will get you there in comfort, whilst others will probably break down on route. A valid provider will give you a thorough consultation to ensure you’re on the right course. If a company has a creditable product, they’ll show you examples of it prior to registering.
A sneaky way that training providers make a big mark-up is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and offering an exam guarantee. This sounds impressive, but is it really:
Everyone knows they’re still being charged for it – it’s obviously been inserted into the gross price invoiced by the training provider. It’s certainly not free – and it’s insulting that we’re supposed to think it is! It’s everybody’s ambition to qualify on the first attempt. Entering examinations when it’s appropriate and funding them one at a time makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you prepare appropriately and are aware of the costs involved.
Shouldn’t you be looking to find the best exam deal or offer at the time, not to pay the fees marked up by the training college, and to do it locally – rather than possibly hours away from your area? A lot of current training providers secure huge profits because they’re getting paid for examinations upfront then cashing in if they’re not all taken. The majority of organisations will require you to do mock exams and prohibit you from re-taking an exam until you have proved to them you have a good chance of passing – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.
Exams taken at VUE and Prometric centres are approximately 112 pounds in Britain at the time of writing. What’s the point of paying huge ‘Exam Guarantee’ costs (most often hidden in the package) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.
A useful feature that many training companies provide is a Job Placement Assistance program. The service is put in place to help you find your first job in the industry. Sometimes, people are too impressed with this facility, as it is actually not that hard for any motivated and trained individual to get a job in the IT industry – because there’s a great need for well trained people.
Whatever you do, don’t wait till you’ve passed your final exams before bringing your CV up to date. As soon as your training commences, list what you’re working on and tell people about it! Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is far better than not even being known about. A surprising amount of junior support jobs are bagged by people (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.) If you don’t want to travel too far to work, then it’s quite likely that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service may be of more use than a centralised service, as they’re far more likely to have insider knowledge of what’s available near you.
Many people, it would appear, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (sometimes for years), only to give up at the first hurdle when looking for a good job. Promote yourself… Do everything you can to let employers know about you. A job isn’t just going to bump into you.
