Sports betting is extremely exciting and it’s a lot more fun when you win! There are proven sports betting strategies that you can use to win at sports betting and gain an edge.
Sadly, over 90% of people who bet on sports lose, and many lose a lot more money than they should! There’s a reason why the sportsbooks and casinos make so much money. Most bettors just don’t have the discipline they need.
And one of the biggest mistakes that sports bettors make is that after winning a few bets they “press” and start betting even bigger amounts. Eventually they end up losing all their winnings and are left with a loss.
The first key to being a winning sports bettor is to understand proper discipline and money management. If you’re going to be a long term winner, you need to have bet sizes that don’t vary greatly in size and don’t change based on whether you’re up or down.
Second, it’s important not to just bet on a game simply because you can. Many bettors want “action” and will bet on any game they can. The fact is that you won’t have an “edge” on every game – you have to pick your spots wisely.
One sports betting tip that can be extremely useful is to recognize which teams will tend to have the odds skewed in their favor. If a team has a big fanbase then the bookmakers are more likely to move the odds.
As an example, the LA lakers have a large fanbase that is more likely to bet on them. If the “fair” pointspread line is -3, it’s possible that the line will actually be set at -4.5 as they know they will take lots of wagers on the lakers. When this is the case there is value is betting against the “fan favorite”.
Some other teams that tend to get a lot of people betting on them are the Yankees, Red Sox, Celtics and Pittsburgh Steelers. This rule doesn’t apply for every game that these teams play, but it’s something worth paying attention to.
I also strongly recommend that you pick a half dozen teams in the sport you are wagering on to follow closely. Become an expert on these teams and learn the ins and outs of the players. This makes it a lot easier to find wagers on those teams that offer value.
It’s a lot harder to try to follow every team in the league. It’s just not realistic to be able to understand each team and know all the players. By specializing on a handful of teams you are better able to focus your efforts.
